How to keep my t-shirts from pilling?Updated 2 years ago

The most prevalent cause of fabric pilling occurs when two materials rub against each other. To prevent the unattractive pilling of your T-shirts, follow these steps by turning them inside out before tossing them into the washing machine or beginning handwashing. Reducing the movement of your T-shirts during the washing process is key to mitigating this issue.

Here are some simple and effective tips to prevent your T-shirt from developing pills:

  • For the best washing results, wash the T-shirt inside out by hand. In cases where machine washing is necessary, opt for the gentle setting and the shortest cycle available.
  • Always use cold water. To reduce friction, separate garments with similar fabric types and wash them together. Combining heavy items like jeans with lighter sweaters, for example, can lead to increased pilling.
  • Forego the use of a dryer and choose air drying instead. However, to prevent fading, avoid direct sunlight during the drying process. This minimizes agitation and preserves your T-shirts' smooth surface. In warmer months, hang your T-shirts outdoors to expedite drying. During winter, you can hang your T-shirts indoors, but ensure a slight window opening and good ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Avoid the use of bleach or harsh detergents, including fabric softeners. Opt for a gentle soap or detergent as an alternative.
